This poster is for a benefit for Jay Doc Free Health Clinic. The type is done with wood block printing. I thin this is good design because it uses older methods in a contemporary way. The 45 degree angles really add to the whole feel. I also like how there is different sizes and fonts used in this design. This was in the 28th TDC Annual.

This is a poster for the American Institute of Graphic Arts. It definitely looks like water for the letters, but I'm not sure if it is real water or computer generated water. I like this design because it has good placement, and it is creative. The small words are hard to read, but it still looks awesome. This is in the 28th TDC Annual.

Dog Book

This was in the 28th TDC Annual. I think this has a good layout and it creates emphasis on every page by placement. on one page there is a tiny paragraph all by itself, on one page the word 'day' is pink and large and by itself. The designer has illustrated what the words say by moving the type and changing the size. It is very clever.

T: The New York Times Style Magazine

These are covers for the T: The New York Times Style Magazine. The letter T is based on the "Times Fraktur" typeface but is modified. Each cover is designed by a different artist, corresponding with the articles inside. I really like these because of how creative they are. The white one is made out of lace because the issue is about Oscar de la Renta (fashion designer, uses a lot of lace). The way they tie the cover to the issue this way is great. I found this in the 28th TDC Annual.

Learjet NBAA Invitation

This invitation design was inspired by the architecture of the Art deco style. it has the vertical lines and also the cut-outs to make it emphasize height. I like this piece because it has the Art deco feel to it but it wasn't made back then. I located this in The Art of Design.

Bernhardt Furniture

These are two different ads for the same company to put emphasis on their furniture. Each one is a really good illustration with type that accentuates the feel of the furniture. In the top one they used a sometimes ornate serif typeface and squished it all together to create the comfortable feel of the couch. In the bottom one an Art Nouveau typeface was used because that is the style of the bench. I really like what the words say for each piece of furniture.

Max Factor Mascara

This is an ad for Max Factor Mascara. I think this is a clever way of using type. The 'lashes' are formed out of "look at me" phrases, and they look awesome. This is a great ad because when you look at it you see eyelashes, and when you read it, it makes it even better. I like the way they use the ascenders to shape the long lashes. This was in a book titled, Advertising.

Pulp Logo

This is a logo for a juice bar named Pulp. The exploding graphics in the background look like a juice splatter and the overall design is very energetic and vibrant, which helps with the company's image of being healthy and energized. This was in a book, Design Basics.

Grey Watkins Bag

This is a shopping bag for a decorative fabrics manufaturer. The 'W' logo is based on a flourished Victorian typeface and the purple color makes it look royal. I found this in a book titled, Design Basics.

Metropole

This is the logo for the Metropole Restaurant. The font is an altered form of Bifur, which is a font that was designed by A.M. Cassandre. I think this is interesting because of the way the letters are made out of flat color and geometric shapes. It reminds me of the Early Modern style and Art Deco style. I found this in the Cool Type 2wo book.

Boudin Bakery

This is a poster for a bakery that has been around for 150 years. It has a Victorian style to it because of the symmetry and cloth banners. The part that caught my eye is the wheat because of the detail and the placement. This was found in The Art of Design.

Logo and Letterhead

This is from Graphis Design Annual 2008. I picked this because of the 'One Beacon Court' exercise we did in class. The client is ThinkLA which is a new organization needing to attract fresh minds. It uses lowercase letters, and bright orange as the trademark color. It has a very cool logo: merging a thought bubble and a brain as one image. All of this makes it look more fun, approachable, smart, and quirky.

Les Annees Trente

When I first saw this I thought it reminded me of early modern and art deco designs, and then as I read about it, I found out that it is a poster for a series of exhibitions and a film festival about the 1930's. That is the same time as those styles, so I think the retro idea makes it a good design. The typeface is Bifur and Revisiting Type.

Parking Garage

This is an overall view.

Each direction as you would see it in front of you.

This is a really neat concept because the designer took something as boring as a parking garage and made it fun. I think it is very interesting how they had to paint the directions stretched out so that they only look right when you are in a car and need to know where to go. When you look at the the whole picture it just looks like a colorful paint job.

Ray Gun

In the book, Cool Type 2wo, I located this image of Ray Gun stationary. The typeface is Helvetica. It has a envelope, letterhead, and notepad pictured. My favorite part of the design is how it says the actual word of what it is at the top of the jumbled words, like 'letterhead'. Also the jumbled words have a purpose because they say the address and things that are important.

'Nativity Scene'

This is a nativity scene that is just the words of a scripture in the Bible. It is made out of sheet metal and back-lit for night-time viewing. This was a temporary display in the city of Melbourne. I think this is a very modern and clever way to display a 'nativity scene' because it is not the typical scene of a baby Jesus and a manger and all of that. I think it has good placement of the words in relation to each other, if you are not going for readability.

Project 1 Copywriting

ITC Souvenir is a redesign of the original Souvenir font drawn in 1914 by Morris Fuller Benton. Edward Benguiat is the designer of the ITC version created in 1967. ITC Souvenir has a small modern serif. It has a soft design without sharp edges and right angles. There is not much contrast in the thickness of the stroke. The lowercase characters are large and rounded, and several are distinctive. The characters are very legible, due to their large x-height and open counters, which makes this a popular font for many different uses.

Written Reaction

This is a jacket for a book titled Written Reaction. It uses uses found type in the form of plastic letters and also Sabon. I was interested when I saw this because of the shadows. I can definitely read the "reaction" shadow and so to me, that is where the emphasis is. This image was found in a graphic design book; Cool Type 2wo.
